But El Roc\u00edo is no ghost town \u2013 each year, one million people fill the town for one of Spain\u2019s biggest \u2013 and least known \u2013 festivals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One part religious, three parts celebration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>La Romer\u00eda del Roc\u00edo<\/em> takes place fifty days after Easter Sunday \u2013 typically late May or early June. It is a religious pilgrimage that goes back to the 15th century when \u2013 according to legend \u2013 a hunter discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary in a tree trunk near El Roc\u00edo. The pilgrims, known as <em>Rocieros<\/em>, arrive with horses and wagons. The women wear bright flamenco-style dresses, while the men sport short riding jackets and wide-brimmed <em>boleros<\/em>. As more and more pilgrims arrive, the air fills with flamenco music and the smell of fresh food cooking on open fires. As night falls, the pilgrims settle into camps, with bonfires blazing until the sun rises again. Visitors can wander from camp to camp, taking in the festive vibes and the traditional music and dancing.<\/p>\n<p>The climax of the whole festival comes in the morning, when the actual statue of the virgin is brought from the church and paraded throughout the town, as the crowds shout out <em>\u2018Viva la Reina de la Marisima\u2019<\/em> (\u2018Long live the queen of the marshland\u2019). It may sound more like a huge party than a religious event, but the pilgrims are genuinely and passionately devoted. Most notably, the village lies on the edge of the Do\u00f1ana National Park, which is famously rich in wildlife.
