A wine route for every region<\/strong><\/p>\n

Almost every region of Spain produces wine and offers enticing options for enotourism. Some of the most famous Spanish wines come from La Rioja, but other regions should not be overlooked. For example, there are the wines and cavas<\/em> (similar to a champagne) of El Pened\u00e9s, in Catalonia; the fruity whites of the R\u00edas Baixas, in the northwestern region of Galicia; and full-bodied Jumilla wines of Murcia<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> near the southerneastern coast.<\/p>\n

With excellent wine produced throughout the country, you can consider other factors when choosing your wine route, like climate, nature, cultural attractions, and gastronomy. The R\u00edas Baixas route of Galicia<\/a><\/strong> boasts pleasant temperatures and beaches with fine, white sand in picturesque towns like Sanxenxo<\/strong> and O Grove<\/strong>.<\/strong> Visiting El Pened\u00e9s in Catalonia also offers the chance to explore cosmopolitan Barcelona, and experience Spain\u2019s sunny Mediterranean coast. A route through Andalusia\u2019s Jerez de la Frontera is a whole different experience, of flamenco and horses.<\/p>\n

A very special time to experience a Spanish wine route is during the wine harvest<\/strong> in early autumn. Most regions have a fiesta de recolecta<\/em> (harvest festival), which offers a unique cultural experience as well as a chance to sample excellent local wines. A typical harvest festival will include the traditional treading of the grapes and the tasting of the first must. Wine-related events are often organized as well, such as tasting sessions and open days at wineries. Alongside these events, there is usually a cultural program with traditional dancing, parades, theatrical events and more.<\/p>\n

The Rioja harvest festival<\/strong> <\/a>in Logro\u00f1o<\/strong><\/strong> is one of the most acclaimed. Besides its world famous wine, superb programming during the festival also draws visitors from far and wide. The town is filled with color and fun with numerous activities on offer, like bull running, floats, music, and open air meals in the street. It takes place during late September, and festivities last for five days. The harvest festival in Jerez de la Frontera <\/a>is another that draws an international crowd. This celebration pays tribute to the three emblematic elements of Jerez de la Frontera: wine, horses and flamenco.<\/p>\n
